The Gestalt Approach in ELB Coaching
Human beings are a whole of their needs, motives, desires, fears and saboteurs. The effective method of the ELB, with the contribution of the Gestalt approach, helps one to lead a more fulfilled life, making it possible to strengthen and enrich the bonds of life.
The Gestalt approach is an important approach in the literature that we also use in ELB coaching. Gestalt reveals how we experience the world and life and how unique personalities can emerge from the same patterns of experience. Understanding this approach and applying it to our lives requires a courageous look at ourselves.
Life is multidimensional. Just as a person cannot be judged by one aspect of themselves, life cannot be judged just by one component. Moreover, each aspect is in interaction with one another, just as the components that makeup a human being are.
If we want to comprehend life and human beings, trying to grasp these aspects separately will not yield the desired result. Because a whole composed of parts is not the same as its parts. That is why I am always telling you about the holistic approach, the holistic view of coaching.
The human being, is the whole of all of their characteristics, each valuable in its own, and lives the life created by this whole.
The concept of Gestalt approach does not have a direct equivalent in Turkish. So my intention in this blog post is not to define it, but rather to talk about the key points that will help you understand and experience it and see how you can combine it with ELB coaching.
Gestalt Principles in the ELB Framework
If you wish to discover your inner potential, achieve your goals, make your life fulfilling, and to unlock your potential that will enable you to live a holistic and creative life full of awareness, you must first understand how the principles of Gestalt and ELB are integrated.
- An individual is responsible for their own life (Principle of Action)
I have been telling that “The Future Starts Today”, meaning can build or rebuild your future today as you wish. You created your present with the choices you made in the past. Your present is the result of the choices you made in the past.
Moment by moment, your life is guided by the choices you make. Each moment is a choice. There is a great sense of freedom in knowing that you are and will continue to direct your life with your own choices. It also offers one a spectacular playground.
You are responsible of your life, you are responsible of what you are going through today and if you don’t like something, you can make the first step towards change today.
- People love completeness, not ambiguity (The principle of wholes and closure)
Human nature does not like uncertainty. The mind aspires to combine its observations, crafting a cohesive whole. This also applies to one’s relationships and work. We don’t like unfinished business. We want to finish, to complete what is incomplete, and put it behind us. Otherwise, the unfinished always gets in our way. Nobody wants things to get in the way of change. Because this makes one live in the past, does not benefit one’s future.
- Our behavior arises from our needs (The principle of need and form-ground)
Part of the human being is one’s needs. These needs determines one’s behavior. One behaves according to one’s needs. And needs change over time and by circumstance. As one’s needs determine one’s behavior, they also direct one’s interest.
Look where your interest lies, and you will recognize your needs.
Benefits of Using the Gestalt Approach in ELB Coaching
Coaching is a method that leads you to change and transformation, brings fulfillment to your life, and enables you to do so by unlocking your potential. In ELB coaching, the first step is to see, recognize and accept yourself as you are. Only then will you be able to access and realize the potential that awaits you within.
- Increases awareness
The Gestalt approach keeps you here and now, in the moment. It allows you to more easily express the state of your body and mind, the current state of your emotions and thoughts. It is essential to understand the current you, to realize what is present and to live with awareness so that you can make connections between your experiences and feelings.
- Enables self-discovery
In ELB coaching, where the first step is to learn to know yourself, the Gestalt approach aids you in understanding your beliefs, values and the recurring patterns of your life. It helps you to achieve unity between your inner potential and your desired goal.
- Allows one to break false and negative belief patterns
Your beliefs can show up in unexpected areas of your life, in ways you would never have thought of, or even noticed, and prevent you from moving forward. With the help of the Gestalt approach, you can change these patterns, the cycles that arise from these beliefs, and replace them with positive, functioning cycles.
- Enhances creativity
A person is more than their perceived limits. Using Gestalt with ELB coaching, you can find creative solutions to expand your boundaries and unlock your potential.
- Enables learning from experience
ELB coaching recognizes the power of experience. Gestalt makes it easier to learn from experiences and insights. The knowledge brought to consciousness through mindfulness can be practiced in everyday life. So one can discover oneself more deeply and move onwards.
