Knowing Yourself
NOSCE TE IPSUM
This Latin word means “know thyself” in our language, and it is engraved on the front facade, on the triangular pediment above the columns at the entrance of the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, which was thought to be the center of the world in Ancient Greece.
This phrase, which has grown in popular strength to the present day, is attributed to different sages. These are Spartan Chilon, son of Damagetes, the first of the 7 Sages, the first philosopher from Anatolia who lived between 624-546 BC, Thales of Miletus, Socrates, the founder of Greek philosophy, Pythagoras, who lived in Ionia between 570-495 BC and is also known as the “father of numbers”, and Solon of Athens, who is estimated to have lived in 670-560 BC and wrote the oldest constitution.
Apart from these names, various sources associate this cult phrase with the Greek poet and the daughter of Apollo, Phemonoe. The concept of Knowing yourself, which is the main teaching in the field of many disciplines, has been repeatedly defined by sages. The reason for this is that the way of self-improvement begins with the individual’s self-knowledge and reaches its peak with knowing oneself. It is the key that opens the door to the journey of the road.
The individual’s self-recognition, therefore, his/ her self-knowledge is a valuable process. The most important thing is the power of the desire for that process. If a person wants to know himself, he goes on this journey but if he does not have enough desire in this regard, all kinds of external factors will be in vain. Whatever you are feeling right now, whatever is the extent of the desire inside you, remember “giving time to time”, and keep reading.
Everywhere there is coach and coaching, there is action. Recognizing your own values and determining the new version of you, going beyond reflections and self-deception through dedication to your decisions and respecting the path you planned by bringing all that you have done with your rationalization to your soul, to take what life has already given and to reach what you already have by creating the tools you need, to live and ensure others live as well. The abstract active action in the relevant action process is to recognize yourself first in order to know yourself.
The doors will open for a new “me.” That new ”you” will feed on self-knowledge.
Apart from ”me“ and ”you”, there are many other concepts we need to observe, know, comprehend and understand. Naturally, there are also questions regarding these.
Coaching can be taken or done, but “livable” coaching is better. Perhaps, this is something that everyone in life should adopt and understand. We live in a huge universe, and in a world in that universe. The more one and whole we live with the universe inside and outside of us, the happier and more peaceful we are.
We should remember that each of us living in this world has a world of its own. We create those worlds, and we decide what happens in them. We place our families, our jobs, our interests, our cat or dog inside them. Our own world that exists here or that we have created. It is all about us. In this sense, things outside of us are not about us. Everything changes and transforms. Sometimes over time, sometimes with a person, and sometimes with a COACH, but in all circumstances and situations, change and transformation start from the inside out.
A saying I like very much is as follows: “even a drop falls when it completes itself.“
If you know that change is calling you, it becomes easier to embrace it, and the change you accept always comes to you with a present.
Sun Tzu who was considered a wise person in Far Eastern sciences in the 5th century BC said; “when you change the way you look at the things, the things you look at also change.” At the point you will reach with the Holistic Life & Business Coaching training program, as a coach with multidimensional perspectives, you will become a master of awareness in areas of business and private life you will handle holistically. All your life spaces will begin to bloom from nowhere.
Here I will suggest a small exercise: Make a list of what is happening in your world. Write “My world” at the top of this list that is unique to you. Then separate the ones you like and the ones you don’t like in that list.
At this point, I share with you a poem from the sage of the other science, Mowlānā Jalāloddin Rumi.
I Passed What I Say Will Pass
This world exists because I hear, touch, see, taste and smell…
Because I am aware. I made my own way for myself from the very beginning..
Thus I created a world, assigned roles to those on the stage..
I loved; I said my love, I shared; I said my friend..
I felt it very deep down; I said my mother, I was angry, I could not; I said my father..
I passed what I say will pass
I ended what I say will end
I wrote off what I detested, I went my way..
The day broke; I shrugged, I said enough..
Thus, those left behind, do not attempt at calling me to account…
You existed because I was aware of you, you are absent today because I gave you up..
How dare you find the right to intervene in another life, to question carelessly, to judge recklessly ..
Do not cross the line, mortals!..
As I accept disappearance, as snowflakes are constantly closing on my footprints, and even as the sun is setting every day, what is this impudence you have; you cannot even accept being erased from the memory of another mortal..
When the cemeteries are full of people who consider themselves indispensable, what is with this gimmickry above the ground?
Do not cause me trouble, away with it …
Away with it and leave, but know ..
Blind ignorance makes people ugly!
The cause of my silence is my nobility…
I have an answer for every word.
Yet, I first see whether the word is really a word and then whether the person who says it is really a man…
Rumi
No matter who we are, each of us has a journey of self-knowledge and self-recognition along with a story of that journey.
What phases have you gone through on this journey, at the point you have arrived?
What is waiting for you?
What stage of this journey are you at right now?
What do you need to internalize during this time?
Facing the deepest issues is a matter that requires courage. If you have been reading my blog posts so far and there has not been completion and recovery in the conditions that are still continuing, look back at yourself and at the center you stand in your life. Perhaps one of the goals of your journey is to solve your issues that are not overcome.
Before creating a social and communal impact with coaching, you may need a radical transformation in your personal space. You have to re-identify the areas of need in your journey of self-realization.
Give yourself time at a point where the energy reflected outside has never changed, has not left its past life, and is still wandering around, internally trying to find its direction. It is a state where you are walking internally but don’t know where you are walking towards, let yourself be. Allow yourself to be free from the feeling of being lost, to get out of the ferris wheel. Stay in the process, continue your path safely and surrender.
Which way do you need to go?
What do you need to resolve first to get ahead in self-knowledge?
What is blocking the flow?
What do you need to figure it out?
What has changed in the process of self-knowledge?
What will change?
What’s left and what else is waiting on the way?
What needs to be addressed to achieve a solution and move forward at the moment?
Self-conquering before conquering the world, advancing with self-wisdom, and giving time to time…
What are you conditioning yourself thinking if you go the wrong way, you will create your own flood? You want to see the end or the road for new relationships, business plans, and projects. You cannot see ahead. There are situations in your relationship that don’t work out or get back on the rails, and you are looking for an exit.
You are looking for the doors of opportunity around you. You are asking if he/ she is the right person. You need quick changes. You want to triumph at the end of your struggles. You are hoping for a compensation after a disappointment, and frustration. You cannot be content with what you have, you want so much more. There are emotional manipulations in the relationships you experience, and conversations that tire out your heart in them. I don’t know what you are going through right now; but remember, everything changes and transforms.
Coaching is sometimes like digging a water well for someone who has been dehydrated in the desert. And sometimes it will make you dig a water well before you get dehydrated.
Coaching goes back to the origin of the issues for your self-knowing; finds them out, transforms them, brings them to the present, and you continue your journey from here, without getting past any of them. That is why self-coaching is such a precious adventure.
If you are constantly in doubt, you will not be able to make the right moves with the right people, and it will be difficult to reach unity. You should know that not everyone is the same person. If you want exchanges of affection and good relationships with others, you must first organize your relationship with yourself. If you don’t take care of yourself and protect yourself, others cannot do it for you. You will walk the journey of self-knowledge, but you will be a companion to those who walk their own path on the same road. First, be at peace with yourself, protect your rights, and learn to say “I”.
In this blog post, we mentioned that the journey of knowing yourself is through recognizing yourself; but if we take this process to the next step, COACHING will be your strongest companion, giving you the space you need to get to know your body, know your mind, your emotions, your thoughts, and your soul.
